“The Cold war is over, or is it? During communism times pre 1990, for Bulgaria contact with the West was very limited. Obviously, the internet was only a theoretical concept so everything we knew about the world came through our TV and radio boxes at home and the two state television programs.

The generation that came to age in the decades between the 70s and the 90s would associate certain melodies which were borrowed (it is not clear whether that was through the proper licensing channels, likely not the case) by the Bulgarian TV studio for some very popular programs such as daily information bulletin, weekly Sunday talk shows Jay Leno style (and era), lottery draws, weekend morning tv shows. For example, the intro of Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’ would forever be stuck in our minds as the melody for trivia quiz show ‘A minute is a lot’ which aired Saturdays at around noon time. As one can imagine these tracks bring a certain feeling of domestic coziness of the living room from the pre Iron Curtain fall for the generations that lived with them.

Similarly, there was quite a bit of cultural borrowing (official, or otherwise) from western pop culture and there are a number of songs which are known to Bulgarians of this generation with a version made by Bulgarian artists and production studios.” Valentin Doychinov, aka V-Stok
