TRACKLIST

  1. Deodato_Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001) : The 2001 theme gets a funky makeover by Brazil’s genius musician and arranger Deodato. An often played ‘anthem’ tune at ‘rare groove’ and funk nights that I used to go to as a kid. This is the 7” version. It sounds fantastically funky! I absolutely love Billy Cobham’s drums on this…

  2. Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes_Song for my Father: Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes gives his brilliantly loping groove to Horace Silver’s latin jazz classic.

  3. Jimmy Smith_Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf (part II) :A Bugalu tinged blues that builds and builds to frenzied Big Band mayhem with Oliver Nelson’s great arrangement

  4. Odell Brown & The Organizers_Mas Que Nada: A great and groovy rare Hammond version of the Brazilian standard. This was a big dancefloor tune with the ‘Jazz Dance’ movement in the mid 80s in the UK.

  5. Santana_Dance Sister Dance: Santana bring their virtuosity to this good feeling latin groove that builds to an amazing double time psychadelic synth string jam. Another one for the Jazz dancers out there!

  6. Joe Thomas_Polarizer: A funk fusion classic, often sampled. A sublime groove, great horn arrangement and ridiculous groove that provides a great backdrop to Joe’s flute and some seriously funky synth soloing!

  7. Donald Byrd_Street Lady: Another much sampled club classic from Donald’s Blue Note Album of the same name. A simply ridiculous tune. Timeless, and guaranteed to light up any dancefloor!

  8. War_Galaxy: Trippy driving funk from one of my favourite bands ever! Amazing musicians who really knew how to arrange great hooks and grooves for the floor as much as their ability to play with amazing technique.

  9. Gary Bartz_Swing Thing_The great post bop saxophone player as he started to experiment with funk and disco influences. The big hit from this Capitol album was ‘Music is my Sanctuary’ but the way that this track builds into a funk workout from a walking jazz groove really illustrates his own musical journey at the time to me…and the groove… THE GROOVE!!!

  10. Bobbi Humphrey_Uno Esta: Bobbi is such a beautiful flautist and her seminal Blue Note albums of the 70s have a great vibe which again spawned many tunes that were big hits in the clubs when I first started to go out. This is a stone cold classic!

  11. Harvey Mason_Sho ‘Nuff Groove: Another drummer first and foremost (perhaps most famously heard on Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters’ classic ‘Chameleon’), Harvey also made a string of albums as a leader and producer. He still occupies both drum and production chairs today on a wide variety of projects. Someone who I very much look up to! The title of this track says it all…

  12. Cameo_Flirt: Larry Blackmon, brilliant all round musician, vocalist and producer with his neighbourhood band Cameo. Another of my favourite bands EVER! Everybody loves their later 80s hits but well worth delving into their vast back catalogue!

  13. Balckbyrds_Dancin’Dancin’: Like WAR another group of Jazz musicians who were inspired by the dance floor and made it ehir own. Super crisp production on this track and a nice up-tempo re-visit of the Cameo groove that preceeds it.

  14. Charles Earland_The Only One: Charles was a another master of the Hammond organ who developed from a jazz and r&b background to make amazing funk and disco productions. This was a huge hit for him and still sounds fresh and crisp today.

  15. Joe Farrell_Too High: Back to the raw. Joe Farrell leads this brilliant jammed out jazz version of Stevie Wonder’s hit with a group of virtuosos from the CTI stable! Amazing playing and dynamics throughout and some of my favourite Steve Gadd drums ever!
